Regaining Standards Of Customer Service}

In todays business, customer service is a rapidly vanishing standard for employees of large corporations such as banks, telephone companies and insurance companies. There are several reasons for the demise of true customer service and the circumstances of such demise addressed here are the use of first names only, limited to access to real decision makers and inadequate recourse for unhappy consumers.

The first tier and circumstance that would vastly improve todays current status of customer service would be a training customer service representatives that their jobs are on the line based on an objective rating of what percent of individuals whom they deal with have their problems resolved in a positive manner with no further steps necessary. This means that putting off a customer by requiring new paperwork, or new steps for the customer to take before the problem can even be addressed would not satisfy the customer service representatives required percentage, individuals shuffled to other personnel or supervisors would not satisfy this percentage and that claiming there is nothing to be done in a particular instance would not satisfy this percentage. Monthly assessments of such percentage requirements, which should hover over 60%, would be cause for immediate firing. This change would start with customer service representatives providing their first and last names or a specific identification number so that they can be easily identified. Second, this would require provision of the real solution provided by the representative, all claims that further information was requested or that the individual calling in was unreasonable would be acceptable but would not mitigate the failure on the part of the customer service representative to solve the problem. The failure of todays customer service representatives to deviate from a script that often seems to be a mechanized attempt to put off consumers would further be addressed by a clear path to individuals within the company with actual authority to solve problems that remain unsolved by customer service representatives.

Access to individuals with significant decision making power is often denied because consumers are viewed as unimportant. Angry consumers end up having to go outside a given business to have their problems addressed whether it is to an attorney general or some other governmental consumer agency, business bureaus and perhaps, even ultimately small claims court. If, after instituting a better quality of customer service representative as described above, still results in unhappy customers, albeit fewer than before the changes described above, consumers should have a direct path to a company employee with significant decision making power. This second tier of consumer recourse should resolve issues left unresolved by customer service representatives. If after such consideration by a corporate decision maker still leaves a consumer unhappy, companies should be required to simplify the consumers actions in obtaining further consideration. This third tier would supply forms to the consumer that indicate the state agencies and authorities that oversee the specific business. Such governmental agencies would have sufficient means for such review without additional expenditure or expansion because of the reduction in complaints that come to them because of lazy or incompetent customer service representatives at tiers one and two. Instead of their own internal appeal process, companies themselves should be required to report their failures in resolving consumer problems. In the event such numbers did not match up with actual reports filed by consumers, the companies should be subject to fine.

In todays economy there is no shortage of capable individuals ready to step into the shoes of employees unwilling or unable to accommodate consumer complaints.

The Hospitality Club became the first hospitality exchange network to pass the 100,000 members milestone on January 11, 2006. Its closest competitors, CouchSurfing and GlobalFreeLoaders, have 40,000 and 30,000 members.

Hospitality exchange organisations are dedicated to putting travellers in contact with locals offering to host them in their house for free, or simply offer them a tour of their city or share a meal with them. Besides the obvious financial advantage, the Hospitality Club believes that “bringing people together and fostering international friendships will increase intercultural understanding and strengthen peace.”

Servas Open Doors, the oldest network, in fact formally views itself as a peace initiative, and there are also a number of smaller hospitality exchange networks which focus on specialized audiences, such as Agritourism.

w:Veit Kühne from Dreseden, Germany, who founded the Hospitality Club in 2000 while he was still a student, believes that “one day, everyone will have the opportunity to visit any country knowing that someone will be waiting to receive them with open arms. People will travel in a different way, meet each other and build intercultural understanding through personal contact.”

“There will be many members in places like Israel and Palestine, Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Chechnya, Rwanda, or Timor who will exchange hospitality with each other, and in small steps the Hospitality Club will have helped making peace a lasting vision for our wonderful planet,” he adds.

Hospitality Club was the first online organisation to offer on a major scale the possibility for travellers to find and contact locals open to cultural exchange. The whole system is entirely free, and hosting fees are supported by Google advertisements. The safe and efficient operation of the 30+ languages website and its database, forum, and chatroom depends on the work of hundreds of volunteers from around the world.

Anybody can become a member, but they must provide their full name and address, for security reasons. All members have a profile they can fill with information about themselves and their preferences, to help prospective visitors contact the person most likely to welcome them.

The most often mentioned drawback of the system is lack of security. The main difference between hospitality exchange networks and other social networking platforms such as Orkut or LiveJournal is that the former’s ultimate objective is to allow for face-to-face meetings. Users should realise that there is a risk involved, although according to Frenchman Jean-Yves Hégron, main software developer of the Hospitality Club, “By using the Club you have the same level of risk as the one you face whenever you get out from your home.”

Discussion about strategic or security issues is not allowed on the website’s forum, hence critics often mention lack of transparency in how they perceive decisions are taken by volunteers in Hospitality Club. Another point of critique is the fact that there is no legal organisation behind Hospitality Club, and the domain name is registered to the founder of the Club himself. Messages containing links to other hospitality exchange networks were at some point deleted without further notice though this policy has since then been reverted. Exponential growth of the network has also caused server failures alike to those observed in Wikipedia until recently.

The idea of free hospitality exchange is not new. Servas was the first organisation to develop it, right after World War II. It still exists to this day, with over 15,000 members, and is represented as an NGO in the United Nations. Because democratic, paper-based Servas is perceived as bureaucratic by some, Hospex was created as the first online network in 1991.

Hospitality Club succeeded to Hospex in August 2000, introducing innovative security features ranging from spam protection to passport control and a sophisticated feedback system, thus making online hospitality exchange available to travellers with higher safety concerns. From 1000 members in July 2002 to 10,000 in February 2004, it quickly grew to 100,000 on 11 January 2006 and is expected to reach the million in about two years.

Tatra Mountains –A Slovakian man who was trapped in his car under an avalanche, has escaped by urinating on ice to melt it. The man—who had 60 half-litre bottles of beer with him in the car—literally drank his way to safety.

“I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it,” he said.

Rescue workers found the man still drunk on a mountain path in Slovakia’s Tatra Mountains four days after his Audi car was buried.

“It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I’m glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there,” he said.

He first planned to shovel the ice from outside his window, directly into his car, but soon realised that he would run out of room in his car before he would be able to reach the top.

Snowfalls of levels not seen since 1941 have fallen over parts of Europe over the past week. Some places have registered more than 3 meters of snow in 24 hours.

Must-Have information before deciding on Piano Lessons!

Music is a very important part of our lives. It does a lot more than just please our ears it is an integral part of human development.

Several years ago, there was an experiment done by scientists at the University of California at Irvine in 1993. (published in the journal Nature) They had college students listen to Mozart Sonata for two Pianos in D Major, a relaxation tape or silence. Immediately after these sessions, the students took a spatial reasoning test (the ability to put together puzzles) and the students scores improved drastically after listening to the Music. The reason is because music and spatial abilities share the same pathways in the brain.

Another experiment was done later on by researchers at Appalachian State University and the researchers were successful as well in connecting music to boosting brain power .

They gave preschool children (ages 3-4 yrs. old) training for 8 months. Children were divided into 4 groups: Keyboard lessons, Singing lessons, Computer lessons and No lessons. After 8 months of this treatment, the children were tested on their ability to put together puzzles (spatial-temporal reasoning) and to recognize shapes (spatial-recognition reasoning) and the results were astounding! They found that only those children who had taken the keyboard lessons had improvement in the spatial-temporal test. (The children did not, however show any change with the spatial-recognition.)

Another interesting observation I ve made is the connection between the Medical profession and the Music profession a large majority of M.D. s are Classically trained musicians! I ve encountered many and have asked them all the same question how do you make the connection between the medical and the musical and the response I ve had is that they are both very intricate and require a rare focus and mathematical mindset in many different directions at once. It s achieved by many years of training in either and/or both fields, which by the same token – enhance each other. So to them the similarity in brain function and focus is evident and invaluable to both the medical and the musical. It will be interesting to see the results of further study in that matter. Currently, there is no conclusive proof scientifically of the connection between Medical and Musical.

Now for the 5 Tips for Piano Lessons!

1) Interest:

Assess the interest of your child. Is this something they really like or is it your dream? The child should show genuine interest in music and a keyboard in order for their learning experience to be a pleasant and successful one. If they are not interested ask yourself why you even pursued it? Is it because you have an inner desire for it? It s NEVER too late to begin! Sign yourself up for Piano lessons if that s the case. I ve have students of every age some played when they were kids then quit. As they got older, regretted quitting and vowed to one day pick it up again. Then there are others who always had the desire but not the opportunity and now find themselves retired with plenty of time on their hands. They ve actually become Piano virtuosos! I give you these lovely examples to give you hope and a nudge psssst! It s never too late! The student must be genuinely interested.

2) Instrument:

It s fine to begin Piano lessons on an electronic keyboard. As time goes on, the student will know in which direction they d like to take the Piano lessons. If it s just for personal enjoyment, it s fine to stay with a keyboard.

If it s for classical Piano training then the student should be switched over to an acoustic Piano. In my experience as a Piano teacher, I ve realized that a Spinet Piano (the ones that have a low back) unless it is given as a gift, should not be purchased. It would be preferable to purchase an Upright which is a Baby Grand Piano, but instead of the strings being vertical they re horizontal. The reason being, that the action on the keys is much better technically for the student s hand, and it sound substantially better to the ear.

3) Teacher:

Ask around and get feedback from others about their teachers. Find out the teacher s background. Where did they get the education from, how long have they been teaching, where do they teach from, what are the surroundings like? Ask current students how patient the teacher is and how do they feel during the lesson. You should get a pretty good idea about the teacher by how current students are progressing. Does the teacher s personality blend with your child s. Remember, this is a choice! In school the children have to adapt to the teacher that has been assigned to them, and that s a good thing. They learn to get along with different types of personalities, but Piano is an extra-curricular activity and should be a pleasant one that they look forward to.

4) Schedule:

Children can be easily overwhelmed by too much in their schedule. As adults we ve experienced overload for ourselves and it s SO counterproductive! It s highly advisable to limit activities in order for the kids not to be pulled in too many directions.

Once activities have been chosen, I ve found with my own kids and students that by writing down a daily schedule, everything gets done and there are no excuses for forgetting to practice.

5) Dedication:

Once a schedule is in place, practicing piano will become part of daily routine. After a while, the student won t be so worried about time, but will want to achieve goals set by the teacher. The student will need dedication in order for the craft to go from mechanical to musical. Encourage them to listen to a wide range of styles and genre s in order for them to develop their own taste for music. At an early stage, dedication can be ingrained in a student by participating in Recitals, Talent Shows and Worship Services. It takes diligence and dedication also sacrifices to make piano a beautiful craft.

An acrobatic group known by the name of Spelbound has been declared as the winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2010, a televised variety talent show competition broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom. As the winning act of the show, Spelbound have won £100,000 (US$144,580, 120,313, A$175,079) and a place at The Royal Variety Performance, an annual gala evening that is attended by senior members of the British Royal Family.

In no particular order, the top three acts were revealed to be two dancers known by their stage name of Twist and Pulse, gymnastic group Spelbound and Kieran Gaffney, whose act involves playing on the drum kit. After Kieran Gaffney was revealed to be in third place, Anthony McPartlin, who hosts Britain’s Got Talent with Declan Donnelly, said to Kieran: “Well done Kieran. Kieran, you’re a star, you came back, you got all the way to the final. I know you’ve loved this. You’ve loved this, haven’t you?” In response to this, Kieran Gaffney stated: “Thank you very much. Thank you, everyone for supporting me. Thank you.”

Shortly afterwards, on the episode that was broadcast live on ITV1 on Saturday, Anthony announced: “After tens of thousands of auditons, five semi-finals and an amazing final, this…this is it. One of you is about to walk away with £100,000 and a place at this year’s Royal Variety Performance. The winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2010 is…Spelbound!” Glen Murphy from Twist and Pulse commented about finishing in second place, stating: “Yeah, it’s amazing. I can’t even believe it. I can’t believe it at all.”

Alex Uttley, a 24-year-old member of Spelbound, commented on the gymnastic group’s victory, commenting: “Oh, my god. This is unbelieveable. We just want to say thank you to everyone out there. It just shows that all our hard work has paid off.” One of the coaches of Spelbound, named Neil Griffiths, stated about Spelbound: “Oh, they’ve worked so hard over the last few weeks. Um, since the semi-final, we…we really had to pull out the stops to try and up the game. They’ve not known they’ve worked in the gym from six in the morning till twelve…twelve o’clock of the night. I couldn’t have asked for more. Um, it’s a team of coaches. I don’t take all the credit myself. There’s, uh, two people up there that know who they are who’ve been fantastic.”

Spelbound consists of 24-year-old Alex Uttley, Nicholas Illingworth, aged 24, Adam Buckingham, aged 21, 20-year-old Adam McAssey, 19-year-old Douglas Fordyce, 18-year-old Edward Upcott, 18-year-old Leighanne Cowler, 17-year-old Katie Axten, 17-year-old Lauren Kemp, 15-year-old Jonathan Stranks, Abigail Ralph, aged 15, 13-year-old Hollianne Wood and Amy Mackenzie, aged 12. Bookmakers had previously predicted that Spelbound would be the most likely act to become the winner of the series.

The running order for the final started with Twist and Pulse. The second act to perform was Liam McNally, a 14-year-old singer. The running order subsequently continued with 40-year-old impressionist Paul Burling, singer Christopher Stone, aged 28, Tina & Chandi, a woman and dog dancing act, Connected, a five-piece singing group, Kieran Gaffney, aged 12, 22-year-old Tobias Mead, a dancer, 80-year-old singer Janey Cutler and Spelbound in that particular order.

Earlier on in the final, Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has stated to Spelbound: “We are hosting the 2012 Olympics and I think ‘what a brilliant opening act’.” Fellow judge Piers Morgan also commented that “[t]he purpose of this show is to identify hidden great British talent. You are that act.” After Spelbound won in the final, another judge, named Simon Cowell, stated that “the right boys and girls won on the night” and that he could “only say on live TV that that was one of the most astonishing things I have ever seen. Seriously.”

The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled more products over the last few days, though not all because of excessive lead.

While American toy companies have been rocked in the last few months by numerous unsafe Chinese-made products, mostly due to excessive amounts of lead in paint, a few of the latest recalls were actually due to design flaws.

Also recently recalled are sunglasses and toy cars from the Dollar General chain of price-point retailers.
