Austrian police today found an estimated 20–50 decomposing corpses in an apparently abandoned lorry.

Roadworkers who spotted the vehicle, which had been there since yesterday at least, alerted police. Responding officers found it full of corpses. The lorry is on the so-called “Eastern Motorway”, the A4, close to the Hungarian border. It was on the hard shoulder between Neusiedl and Parndorf, closer to Parndorf.

The victims are thought to have suffocated. Police are seeking the driver. The Krone published an image of a non-articulated food lorry on the hard shoulder, which they report is the vehicle in question. The photo shows a pool of dark liquid on the ground beside the vehicle.

Video from a passing motorist shows at least one helicopter on-scene. The truck, which has pictures of meat on the side, shows branding for Slovakian food firm Hyza. Earlier today the company’s website sported an apparent anti-immigration graphic, which has since been removed.

Wikinews got in touch with Hyza. “We are truly sorry about [the] tragedy” they told us in a statement. They said they have checked GPS trackers on their fleet and all their vehicles remain in Slovakia. The statement says the lorry in question was one of 21 Hyza vehicles sold on last year. It was then sold again and exported to Hungary, where it is now registered. Hyza told us the new owners have not changed the branding on the vehicle. According to the Bild newspaper, Agrofert — the parent company of Hyza — said in a statement the new owners were required to do so.

Hyza says they will “actively cooperate with Slovak police”, and “express [their] sincere condolences to the bereaved families.”

Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner called it “a dark day” and called for European Union-wide measures to protect immigrant refugees and tackle human traffickers. Neighbouring Hungary is constructing a border fence across its entire frontier with Serbia. Yesterday alone saw a record 3,241 attempts to enter Hungary illegally, according to authorities there.

Conflict in Syria and other parts of the world has led refugees to Europe. Once inside, they can move freely inside the Schengen Area, which covers most of the EU.

Austrian police earlier this week arrested three motorists suspected of people smuggling. One driver is accused of moving 34 people, ten of them children, into Austria from Serbia. The group were left by the roadside near Bruck an der Leitha and reported struggling to breathe in the van.

This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews:

A major snowfall has disrupted transport in Norway this week. Several roads and all railway services have been reported as closed due to the heavy snowfall, and meteorologists have recommended that people try to stay at home if possible. Snow storms are also causing problems in other parts of Southern Scandinavia, such as Denmark and Southern Sweden.

In Norway, the E-18, the highway from Kristiansand and eastwards have been closed after several accidents, which according to the local police primarily was the result of truck drivers not having prepared for the heavy snow and getting stuck.

Several cars got stuck as a result of this, with some motorists being stuck from 3.30 pm Wednesday until Thursday morning. The local Red Cross cooperated with the police in getting food and gasoline out to the stuck drivers, and also evacuated a bus full of senior citizens who had been out on an excursion.

Regional bus and rail services have been canceled for most of Wednesday and Thursday from Kristiansand and eastwards, and in Kristiansand and nearby areas in the southern regions of Norway the heavy snowfall also made local traffic slow with major disruptions and delays.

According to the regional newspaper Fædrelandsvennen, it is expected that there will be about 100 cm more snowfall on Friday alone, with Wednesday and Thursday having resulted in 50 cm so far.

Truckload of trouble for Thai Rak Thai

Truckload of trouble for Thai Rak Thai

Published on April 15th, 2017.

Friday, July 7, 2006

Yesterday saw Thailand’s Attorney General file charges of election fraud with the country’s Constitutional court. According to Sondhi Limthongkul’s ThaiDay, the action seeking the dissolution of five parties was delivered by truck and consisted of over 120,000 pages of legal citations.

Both the Thai Rak Thai party making up the caretaker government and the main opposition Democrats are named. The allegations centre on claims that Thai Rak Thai paid minor parties to participate where seats would otherwise be unopposed, and that the Democrats may have bribed parties to claim that they had been paid by Thai Rak Thai.

Thailand’s prolonged political crisis originally stemmed from repeated corruption allegations against the Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. An April 2nd snap election apparently intended to cement the ruling party’s position and dismiss critics as unrepresentative backfired when the three main opposition parties announced a boycott. This left many seats unopposed, particularly in the country’s troubled Muslim south. With Thai Rak Thai standing alone in strong Democrat territory, a grassroots abstention campaign left many seats empty when they failed to garner the constitutionally required 20% of eligible votes.

Amongst all the political posturing, and allegations that the Election Commission had unduly favoured the ruling party, claims that there had been irregularities surfaced. Thai Rak Thai was accused of having paid minor parties to circumvent the 20% rule by offering token opposition. The claims were brought before the Election Commission who eventually handed the case over to the Attorney General without offering any recommendation. The commission’s sub-committee that prepared the report had recommended the dissolution of Thai Rak Thai.

At present it is unclear if the political crisis will be resolved through the country’s legal system prior to the upcoming October election rerun. The volume of evidence may leave the Constitutional Court unable to agree on a ruling prior to the election.

Inuit Eskimo Soapstone Carvings As Corporate And Cultural Gifts

Published on April 15th, 2017.

By Clint Leung

One of the unique ways about Canadian organizations is their choice of corporate or cultural gifts. In many cases for both companies doing corporate business and political organizations conducting cultural affairs internationally is the use of Inuit Eskimo soapstone carvings from the Canadian Arctic as gifts. This is especially true for gifts to foreign individuals, organizations or heads of state. In the world of commerce, Canadian corporations doing international business abroad have brought over Inuit soapstone carvings for their current or prospective foreign business partners. Asian and European companies have accepted Inuit soapstone carvings as corporate gifts with much delight since Inuit art is as exotic to them as Ferraris are to North Americans. Indeed, when doing business in Japan or in fast growing China, Canadian Inuit art will be a very useful tool for building long term business relationships. This is also true for making inroads in the developing European markets as well.

Inuit Eskimo soapstone carvings from the Canadian Arctic have been used as cultural gifts for many years. Foreign royalty, presidents and other diplomats have been given Inuit Eskimo soapstone carvings as a token of Canadian culture. The recipient list has included quite a few American presidents as well. It is said that Prince Charles of the United Kingdom has been a huge fan of Inuit art ever since he received a soapstone carving as a gift many years ago. His interest has resulted in more awareness of Canadian Inuit art in the United Kingdom. Canadian academic and educational groups have gone abroad with Inuit Eskimo soapstone carvings for their foreign counterparts too.

Within Canada, Inuit Eskimo soapstone carvings have been popular retirement gift items in recent years. Sometimes they have been awarded as prizes for high achievers like top sales people within companies. An Inuit Eskimo soapstone carving is definitely a nice alternative to the standard plaque or trophy award. If such artwork is very much appreciated by recipients in Canadian companies, just imagine how much more Inuit art would be appreciated in companies based outside Canada such as in the United States or Asia. A Canadian Inuit Eskimo soapstone carving will be regarded as an extra special prize.

The use of Inuit Eskimo soapstone carvings in corporate and cultural gift giving today is a result of just how far Inuit art has come. It is evidence that this type of indigenous native art has made it to the fine art status that it deserves.

British Formula Two driver Henry Surtees dies after race accident

Published on April 13th, 2017.

Sunday, July 19, 2009

A spokesperson for the Royal London Hospital has confirmed that British racing driver Henry Surtees has died following an accident at the Brands Hatch circuit earlier today. He was eighteen.

Surtees was competing in the Formula Two championship when Jack Clarke‘s car spun off the track and into barriers ahead of him. A wheel and tyre detatched from Clarke’s car and bounced across the track, striking Surtees on the head.

Surtees was apparently knocked unconscious as the car continued straight on at the next corner and struck the barriers at speed with no attempt to brake. After the car came to a standstill one of the rear wheels continued to spin as the car remained accelerating; there was no further movement due to massive damage from the barrier impact.

Surtees had only recently joined F2 at the start of the current season, having previously driven in the Formula Renault competition. Yesterday at Brands Hatch he celebrated his first podium in the series, earning third place.

Son of John Surtees, a race driver who has held the 1964 Formula One championship and won the motorcycle world championships several times, Henry started off racing go carts and moved on to cars in 2006, competing in a junior championship.

He went on to compete in the 2007 Formula BMW UK season, where he placed seventh overall. In that year he also contested in a limited number of Formula Renault races. In 2008 he was 12th in the Formula Renault championship but had better success in the Formula Renault Winter Series, where he had three podium finishes including one victory from four races. That year he also raced in the last races of the Formula Three season, where he earned another race win.

Both his father John and mother Jane were watching the race in which their son was killed.

Personnel Tracking devices to the rescue

by

Mark Sheldon

Although the world has become a much smaller place in terms of being able to get around it has also become the unknown to many who have to travel to remote places with their work.

Remote workers travel to places that they are often unfamiliar with. This can either be in their own country or the other side of the world.

Many responsible companies now provide their remote workers with personnel tracking devices. These are small units built on GPS technology that allow the company to be able to monitor the whereabouts of their employees and they give the employee the facility to raise a alarm at the touch of a button should they run into trouble.

YouTube Preview Image

The devices are small and therefore very discrete. Because they rely on satellite technology there are no problems with cell coverage like you would have with a mobile phone, and they can literally be used anywhere in the world.

Personnel tracking devices are ideal for remote workers in the aid sector who are often based in a foreign country, in what can be very hostile conditions. The aid workers put their own lives on the line to go and help others who need food, education or just help rebuilding a community. In some cases small villages, where remote workers have been based have been set upon by hostiles and lives have been taken. With Personnel Tracking devices and crisis management solutions this can be avoided. Personnel Tracking devices are like having a third eye overlooking the surrounding area, giving your employees a much better chance of survival in these remote, potentially hostile situations.

Employees who travel a lot can also benefit from tracking devices. This will help the employers realise if there is a problem getting to the employees destination, such as a breakdown or a hijack. Very often the vehicle used to travel will also be fitted with a GPS tracking device to help monitor the asset.

Should an employee be kidnapped the tracking devices are very often small enough to remain undetected and they give the employers a very good chance of finding and aiding the employee before it is potentially too late.
